Regular Briefings on Scientific and Other Developments affecting Risk Management and Liability

We produce a monthly review of a wide range of science literature and assess its implications for liability exposure and risk management. The review process focuses on two main areas; new scientific developments with potential implications for liability insurance and new developments in existing areas of interest. These information streams allows us to provide updates to existing full research reports. The results are made available to clients in briefings specifically tailored to individual client requirements. We have produced over 30 reports on various scientific issues affecting liability insurers; including asbestos, silicosis and occupational stress.

The next development of this service is to make the briefing articles available to clients in a Microsoft Access database to allow all articles relating to a specific topic to be quickly identified and accessed.

Reports

We write reports summarising the current state of scientific knowledge on a particular issue. Although each project is highly client specific, there are essentially four levels of report that we produce.

1. Level 1
These reports provide a summary of the information contained in the journals database. By summarising the information from a number of articles we are able to assess the trends in new developments whereas individual articles inevitably provide a snapshot of the flux of scientific knowledge.

2. Level 2
A more detailed report, which summarises the existing information in the Journals database. Additional research and investigation is carried out into uncertainties that are revealed during analysis of the collated information.

3. Literature Review
A complete review of the scientific literature and other relevant sources is undertaken to produce an in depth report on the current status of an issue.

4. Risk Scaling
These reports provide data for the modelling of exposure profiles. Such modelling is valuable:

  • for estimating pricing and reserving requirements;
  • for assessing the effects of change e.g. to the duty of care.This adds weight to the efforts to lobby the powers that be, and;
  • for demonstrating to the Regulator that reasonable exposure scenarios have been assessed and managed.

Research

Re: Liability (Oxford) Ltd undertakes, manages or commissions scientific research on particular issues to establish the fundamental scientific and legal principals on behalf of companies in the insurance, loss prevention and policy sectors. In the case of commissioned research, the commission is given to an acknowledged authority in the field to establish a clear and thorough unbiased report. Based on the results of this research we package the results into a report or reports designed specifically for the target audience.

Summaries of some of our recent projects for clients may be found on the page “Recent Projects”.
